“U’Paroh hikriv vayisu
bnei yisroel es eineihem vehineh mitzrayim nosei’a achareihem -- And
Pharaoh approached; Bnai Yisroel raised their eyes and behold Egypt
was traveling after them ..” (Shemos 14:10)
The Medrash (Shemos Rabbah
21:5) notes that the pasuk
initially uses the expression of “hikriv
– he came closer” and then it says that Egypt [Pharaoh] was traveling
after them. This tells us that Pharaoh brought Klal Yisroel closer
to doing teshuvah. R’ Brachya said that the proximity
of Pharaoh and his army brought Bnai Yisroel closer to teshuvah
than one hundred fasts and prayers. When Bnai Yisroel saw them,
they became frightened. They lifted their eyes to Hashem, they
cried and regretted their sins, they did teshuvah
and they prayed, as the pasuk
concludes, “they cried out to Hashem.”

The river shall swarm with
frogs, and they shall ascend and come into your palace, your bedroom
and your bed …into your ovens and into your kneading bowls (Shemos
7:28).
We read in Sefer Daniel
(3) that Nevuchadnezzar erected an idol of gold in the Valley of
Dura, in Bovel. The idol was 60 amos
high and its breadth was 6 amos.
All the government leaders were called to participate in the dedication
of the idol. A proclamation was made that when the instruments
sound all who are gathered must fall on their face and bow to the idol.
Whoever would not bow to the idol would be thrown into the fiery furnaces.
Everyone bowed, except Chananyah, Misha’el and Azaryah.

In the parshiyos
preceding this week’s parsha
– Parshas Shemos -- we read about the Golden Age, when Yosef
was in his position of power in Mitzrayim, and Pharaoh personally promised
him and his brothers that they would be privileged to benefit from all
of Egypt’s blessings and prosperity. Many people think
that Galus Mitzrayim (the Egyptian exile) begins with Parshas
Shemos when, as the Torah tells us, a new king arose in Mitzrayim
who did not know Yosef. Rashi explains that Pharaoh feigned ignorance
of Yosef and we read of the decrees that were promulgated and Bnai Yisroel’s
subsequent servitude.

Yaakov Avinu blesses his son
Yehuda (Bereishis 49:12), “Chachlili einayim miyoyin ulven
shinayim meichalav -- their eyes will be reddened from the abundance
of wine and their teeth will be white from the abundance of milk.”
The Talmud (Kesubos 111b)
explains that one who smiles to his friend (i.e. his eyes reflect kindness
and affection and he shows his teeth) is better than one who gives his
friend milk to drink.
