The river shall swarm with
frogs, and they shall ascend and come into your palace, your bedroom
and your bed …into your ovens and into your kneading bowls (Shemos
7:28).
We read in Sefer Daniel
(3) that Nevuchadnezzar erected an idol of gold in the Valley of
Dura, in Bovel. The idol was 60 amos
high and its breadth was 6 amos.
All the government leaders were called to participate in the dedication
of the idol. A proclamation was made that when the instruments
sound all who are gathered must fall on their face and bow to the idol.
Whoever would not bow to the idol would be thrown into the fiery furnaces.
Everyone bowed, except Chananyah, Misha’el and Azaryah.

In the parshiyos
preceding this week’s parsha
– Parshas Shemos -- we read about the Golden Age, when Yosef
was in his position of power in Mitzrayim, and Pharaoh personally promised
him and his brothers that they would be privileged to benefit from all
of Egypt’s blessings and prosperity. Many people think
that Galus Mitzrayim (the Egyptian exile) begins with Parshas
Shemos when, as the Torah tells us, a new king arose in Mitzrayim
who did not know Yosef. Rashi explains that Pharaoh feigned ignorance
of Yosef and we read of the decrees that were promulgated and Bnai Yisroel’s
subsequent servitude.

Yaakov Avinu blesses his son
Yehuda (Bereishis 49:12), “Chachlili einayim miyoyin ulven
shinayim meichalav -- their eyes will be reddened from the abundance
of wine and their teeth will be white from the abundance of milk.”
The Talmud (Kesubos 111b)
explains that one who smiles to his friend (i.e. his eyes reflect kindness
and affection and he shows his teeth) is better than one who gives his
friend milk to drink.

On both Purim and Chanukah
we recite the Al HaNissim, and conclude with thanks and praise
to Hashem. However, the Birchos Shivim
points out a major distinction between the two holidays. On Chanukah
there were revealed miracles, nissim gluyim. The many and
strong army of the Greeks was defeated by the few and weak army of the
Chashmona’im and the small cruse of oil, which was only enough to
burn for one day, remained lit for eight days. In contrast, Purim
is represented by nissim nistarim,
hidden miracles, whereby Hashem brought the salvation for the Jewish
nation through seemingly natural occurrences. As a matter of fact,
the name Esther is derived from the Hebrew word for “concealed.”

“And a man wrestled with
him [Yaakov] until the break of dawn
…” (Beraishis 32:25)
After leaving Be’er Sheva,
Yaakov encountered the Angel of Eisav. Why did the Angel of Eisav
choose to struggle with Yaakov Avinu? He had never attempted to
engage Avraham Avinu, the first and greatest of believers [in G-d],
who promulgated the sovereignty
of Hashem in the world. Nor had the Angel of Eisav confronted Yitzchak,
who had been willing to be sacrificed on the altar at Har HaMoriah.
Why did he now choose to challenge the crushed and defeated Yaakov on
the other side of the Yabbok River?
